Hey Futures,
This past February Feeding Futures hosted our second ever basketball tournament with 6 teams participating: Spencer’s Subjects, Cambodia, Green Growers, T-Time, BBQ Ballers, and Hao Fan. Held after school on a Friday, 6 teams squared up to shoot hoops and dunk buckets for the grand prize of $150 in vouchers. To participate, each player had to pay $10 to enter. Each game was 10 minutes long, with substitutions being allowed.
The group stage set the stage for the finals, with multiple close games. Hao Fan had two close games edging past both BBQ Ballers in a tight 7–6 contest, and Spencer’s Subjects in a 14-13 scoreline. Cambodia too secured a narrow 16–15 win over T-Time in one of the highest-scoring games, while they suffered a thumping defeat to Green Growers, with the latter winning 17-12. All this set up an intense knockout stage.
The four teams that advanced into the semi-finals were T-Time, Spencer’s Subjects, Green Growers, and Hao Fan who all for the most part had dominant performances in the group stage.
In Semi-final 1, we had T-time vs Spencer’s Subjects, T-time started strong with a quick 5-0 lead after quick threes from Tristan and Nikhil. Then, Spencer's Subjects started to make a comeback and cut the lead to 2 points with 3 minutes left. Unfortunately, Alex Baker went down with an injury while driving for a layup, and Spencer’s Subjects were forced to forfeit the game, sending T-time into the final.
Then, in Semi Final 2, we had Green Growers vs Hao Fan. This game started really close, but Green Growers' combination of varsity players Jun and Dennis, as well as the defense of JV red player Luca, helped them beat Hao Fan and secure a spot in the final
And at last, the Final: T-time vs Green Growers. The final was an incredibly high-scoring game, with all players being fatigued from the many matches earlier and not playing great defense. Dennis was unstoppable for Green Growers, giving them a 5-point lead with 1 minute left. Tristan hit a quick mid-range shot, and Nikhil hit back-to-back threes to tie the game. With 10 seconds left, Luca passed the ball to Jun for the game winning three to win the tournament.
Green Growers were extremely pleased with their performance, whereas T-Time were a bit disappointed as they had actually beaten their opponents in the group stage. Nonetheless, this was an exciting competition and the money we raised will of course be going to Akshaya Patra in India to provide food for underprivileged kids. We hope to host something like this next year too. Check out our highlight here!
